Marlowe Cup

Introduction

The Marlowe Cup is an annual sporting exchange between the School of Engineering and the University of Otago Department of Surveying. In even numbered years the Competition is held in Dunedin, and odd-numbered years at Canterbury. There are two codes of Competition. One is for the Marlow (sic) Rugby Football Competition Cup and the other is for the Marlowe Drinking Cup.

Marlowe Rugby Football Competition Cup

This handsome trophy was donated in 1955 by a long time friend and life member of the Engineering Society Mr Thomas Marlowe. The inaugural match was played at Addington Showgrounds. The Society with a heavier team of forwards won decisively. Again that evening, at a "Smoko-Dance" held at the Avon Rowing Club the Engineers won decisively in the boat race. The aim of the Marlowe Rugby Football Competition Cup was to strengthen the liaison between the University of Canterbury School of Engineering and the then School of Mines at Otago University. With the addition of a Surveying Qualification, the Dunedin School went on to become the School of Technology. When the School of Mines moved to Auckland in 1960, the competition became one between ENSOC and Otago University Surveying Students Association.
